Matthew 1 1-17 The genealogy of Jesus
Sinners, Gentiles and women are included in the genealogy of Jesus - what does this say about who can be part of Christ’s family?
Look at who is included:
-
Sinners
- King David committed serious sin
- Manasseh was known for evil
- Yet both are in the line of Jesus
-
Gentiles (non-Jews)
- Rahab was not from Israel
- Ruth came from a foreign nation
- They are brought into God’s story
-
Women (unusual for genealogies at that time)
- Tamar
- Bathsheba
- Mary
- Some had complicated or painful pasts
What does this show you?
- You don’t need a perfect past
- Your background does not block you
- Your nationality does not exclude you
- Your gender does not limit you
God includes people others might reject
What it means for Christ’s family:
- It is open to all who come to Him
- It is built by grace, not status
- It includes people with messy stories
Ask yourself:
- Do you ever feel disqualified because of your past?
- Do you see others as “outside” God’s reach?
This genealogy answers both:
No one is beyond being included in Christ’s family
if they come to Him.
What does it mean for Jesus to bring an end to exile (1:11-12)?
Matthew 1:11–12 mentions the exile to Babylon on purpose. It marks a low point in Israel’s story.
Start with what exile meant:
- People were taken from their land
- They lost the temple, king, and identity
- It felt like separation from God
- It was tied to sin and judgment
Even after returning from Babylon, something still felt unfinished: - No true king like King David
- Foreign powers still ruled them
- Spiritual distance remained
So what does it mean that Jesus comes after exile?
It signals that exile is finally ending.
Not just physically, but deeper:
- Restoration to God
- Jesus brings people back into relationship with God
- Forgiveness of sin
- The root cause of exile is dealt with
- A true King arrives
- Jesus fulfills what David’s line pointed to
- A new kind of home
- Not a place, but being with God
Think of it this way:
- Exile = separation, loss, distance
- Jesus = return, restoration, closeness
What does that mean for you?
- You are not stuck in distance from God
- Your past does not keep you “outside”
- You can belong again
Ask yourself:
- Where do you feel disconnected or far from God?
- What would it look like to return?
Jesus’ coming says:
the way back is open.
