Matthew 1 18-25 The birth of Jesus
Why do you think Jesus needed to be conceived by the Holy Spirit (1:18)?
Matthew 1:18 says Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. That detail matters for a few key reasons.
1. It shows Jesus comes from God
- His origin is not just human
- God is directly at work in His life
- He is more than a normal descendant of King David
You are meant to see: this child is sent by God, not just born into history
2. It protects His identity as both God and man
- Born of Mary → fully human
- Conceived by the Spirit → fully from God
Both are needed:
- To represent you
- To reveal God
3. It connects to God’s promise
- Fulfills prophecy like in Book of Isaiah about a virgin bearing a son
- Shows God keeps His word over time
4. It points to a new beginning
- Not shaped by human effort or lineage alone
- A fresh act of God, like a new creation
5. It prepares Him for His mission
- Jesus comes to deal with sin
- His origin shows He is set apart for that role
Think about this:
- If Jesus were only human, could He fully deal with sin?
- If He were not truly human, could He represent you?
This birth holds both together.
What does this mean for you?
- Your relationship with God starts with His action, not yours
- God steps in when you cannot fix things yourself
The message is simple:
salvation begins with God, not with human effort
Considering the many ways that God speaks, how has God spoken to you?
People see God speaking in different ways. Matthew 1 shows dreams, Scripture, and direct guidance.
Think through your own life. Where have you noticed patterns like these?
1. Through Scripture
- A passage stands out at the right time
- It speaks directly into your situation
- It brings clarity or conviction
Have you had a verse that stayed with you all day?
2. Through inner prompting
- A strong sense to do or avoid something
- A quiet push toward what is right
Not loud. Not forced. But clear enough to act on
3. Through circumstances
- Doors open or close unexpectedly
- Things line up in a way you didn’t plan
Look back. Did something guide your path without you forcing it?
4. Through other people
- Advice or words that hit exactly where needed
- Encouragement at the right moment
Sometimes someone else says what you needed to hear
5. Through conviction
- You feel something is wrong and need to change
- Or you feel peace confirming a decision
That inner response often points you somewhere
Try this
- Think of one recent moment that felt guided
- Write it down
- Ask: what was God showing me there?
If nothing comes to mind yet:
- Start small
- Read a short passage daily
- Pause and reflect for a few minutes
You don’t need something dramatic
Often it’s simple and easy to miss
What’s one moment recently where something felt more than coincidence?
