Matthew 3 1-12 John the Baptist
In what ways is John the Baptist an example to preachers? According to John, what is at stake in terms of our response to Jesus?
In Gospel of Matthew 3:1–12, John the Baptist gives a clear model for preaching and a clear warning about how people respond to Jesus.
How John is an example to preachers
1. He keeps the message simple
- “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near”
- One clear call
- Can people easily understand what you’re saying?
2. He speaks with urgency
- He doesn’t soften the message
- He treats repentance as something that must happen now
- No delay, no vague language
3. He confronts, not just comforts
- He challenges the Pharisees and Sadducees
- Calls out empty religion
- Preaching exposes what is false
4. He points away from himself
- “One more powerful than I will come”
- He lifts up Jesus, not his own status
- The focus stays on Jesus
5. His life matches his message
- Simple lifestyle
- No interest in status or comfort
- What he says matches how he lives
What is at stake in your response to Jesus
1. Real change vs empty claims
- “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance”
- Not about background or words
- It’s about visible change in your life
2. Judgment is near
- Axe at the root of the trees
- Trees without fruit are cut down
- This is urgent and has consequences
3. Separation is coming
- Wheat gathered into the barn
- Chaff burned with unquenchable fire
- Only two outcomes: accepted or rejected
4. Jesus brings both salvation and judgment
- He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire
- Your response determines which you face
Question to reflect on
- If someone looked at your life, what fruit would show your response to Jesus is real?
