Matthew 5 43-48 Love on display
It is not enough for Christians to resemble non-Christians in our love; we are to surpass them. How is that possible for us as imperfect human beings, and what does it mean in the context of this passage 'to ‘be perfect’ as God our Father is perfect?
In Gospel of Matthew 5:43–48, Jesus raises the standard of love far beyond what feels natural.
He points out something simple:
- Anyone can love people who love them back
- Even enemies of God do that
- That kind of love costs you very little
Then He calls you higher.
How can you surpass that kind of love?
You won’t do it by willpower alone.
You do it by changing the source of your love.
1. You receive love before you give it
- God shows kindness to both good and evil
- You reflect that only when you stay close to Him
Ask yourself:
- Do you spend time receiving God’s grace, or just trying to perform?
2. You choose action over feeling
Jesus doesn’t say “feel warmly toward your enemies.”
He says:
- Love them
- Pray for them
That means:
- You help someone who hurt you
- You refuse revenge
- You speak well of them instead of tearing them down
Your feelings may lag behind. That’s normal.
3. You rely on transformation, not perfectionism
You’re not expected to become flawless overnight.
You’re expected to grow.
- Bit by bit
- Situation by situation
What does “be perfect” actually mean?
The word Jesus uses means:
- Complete
- Whole
- Mature
Not “never make a mistake”
So “be perfect” in this passage means:
Love like the Father loves
- He gives sun and rain to all
- He is not selective in kindness
Your love becomes:
- Wider
- Less selective
- Less reactive
What does that look like in real life?
- Someone insults you → you don’t retaliate
- Someone excludes you → you still treat them with respect
- Someone harms you → you pray for their good, not their downfall
That’s not natural.
That’s the point.
The key shift
Stop asking:
- “How do I feel about this person?”
Start asking:
- “How would God treat this person right now?”
Then act on that.
A question for you
Think of one person you struggle with.
- What would loving them practically look like this week?
